Grew up in this part of the country, after leaving for a bit it's crazy how to think back on how safe it is in Maine/Vermont/New Hampshire.
We never locked the door to our house in the 20 years that we lived there, could leave our car running and unlocked outside a store while we went inside, and never had to worry about random violence. Things have been getting worse recently though and you will never guess why

My favorite story about high trust societies is how I booked a room in a small hotel in Tallinn, 20 minutes from the city center, and asked them if it's okay that I arrive at 1 AM. They were, sure, we will leave the door to reception unlocked and your room key on the counter. And they had like a computer and other valuable stuff at the reception. They just weren't worried about random nwords stealing their shit.
I always hear stuff bemoaning how depressing and stagnant Japan is, and yet I cannot for the life of me convince a certain someone very close to me who moved there a while back to return to the US no matter how much i entice and beg.
It's because they are a permanent tourist. Especially if they're making american company money. For all the positive anecdotes you'll hear negative ones from hapas who are ostracized and decide it's not worth trying to build a life. I even saw a half black say their own mom told them YWNBJ lmao

I punched her in the face. She was a disgusting person to look at and smelled, and she's obviously an entitled, ignorant redneck. It was easy, because she kept saying 'I'm doing a PhD, I'm doing a PhD!', and I just kept replying, "Yes, we all know that, but what are you doing? What is your degree in? Are you going to get another one?" She kept saying "I'm doing a PhD" over and over. And in the end I walked out and said, "Enjoy the rest of your stay here, redneck."
