Japan seems to be a high-trust society with low levels of theft and violence.

I sure hope we can figure out why this isn't possible in the US, but we'll probably never know!

Grew up in this part of the country, after leaving for a bit it's crazy how to think back on how safe it is in Maine/Vermont/New Hampshire.

We never locked the door to our house in the 20 years that we lived there, could leave our car running and unlocked outside a store while we went inside, and never had to worry about random violence. Things have been getting worse recently though and you will never guess why

My favorite story about high trust societies is how I booked a room in a small hotel in Tallinn, 20 minutes from the city center, and asked them if it's okay that I arrive at 1 AM. They were, sure, we will leave the door to reception unlocked and your room key on the counter. And they had like a computer and other valuable stuff at the reception. They just weren't worried about random nwords stealing their shit.
